Overview of the action: credits with aerial views of water, kite flying, sand
dunes, Emil counting to 100; looks for dad and finds him flying a large kite;
dad makes birthday meal for Emil at home with T-V on; dad can’t take Emil to
movies because of cost; he has other more important expenses and is out of
work; Emil gets letter from mom who is living in Canada and will remarry soon;
Emil tears up photo of mom and fiancé; mom also sent him DM 500; in math class
in school Emil helps another student, Hassouna, get
right answer on board; teacher asks Emil to stay after class; teacher
compliments Emil on essay written about his dad being jobless; teacher gives
Emil tip of a job in a rug company for his dad; dad gets job and is very happy
about it but crashes his car on way home from interview; has broken bones and
is in hospital; letter arrives from police saying that dad has lost driver’s
license for 3 months but he needs car for job; Emil visits dad in hospital;
while there, Emil’s teacher, Herr Hummel, suggests that while his dad is
recuperating in the hospital that Emil go to Berlin to stay with his sister for
2 weeks who is pastor of a church; at a carnival Hassouna
tells of life in Berlin – can steal all kinds of stuff and get illegal
documents.

Lektion 2 [DVD Chapters 4 (0:12:33) - 6 (0:22:05)]
Overview of the action: Emil and friend are stealing used clothing from a
collection bin; police car comes by; police catch friend but Emil gets away; he
packs suitcase and Herr Hummel takes him to train station in Streiglitz to go
to Berlin to his sister, Frau Hummel, and her son, Gustav; finds seat in train
compartment; only other person there is blond man with pointed teeth, red shoes
and red leather briefcase; Max Grundeis and Emil introduce themselves; Grundeis
flatters Emil by suggesting that he’s 17 years old when he is really only 12;
Grundeis tells of stealing and buying anything in Berlin for money; says he can
get a license for Emil’s dad for a price; Grundeis accepts Emil’s third offer
of DM 1 500 (Emil’s entire money); Grundeis gives him an address to get
license; gives Emil a drink which knocks him out; falls asleep; when wakes up
Grundeis is gone and so is all of his money; arrives in Berlin and sees
Grundeis get out at Bahnhof Zoo station; Emil follows him carrying his suitcase

Overview of the action: Gustav and mom, Frau Hummel, are driving to Bahnhof Zoo
station to pick up Emil; Gustav mad at having to do so many chores at home; his
dad has been dead for 10 years; on bus Emil has no ticket and gets off before
conductor comes; follows Grundeis who goes into a café; Gustav and mom arrive
late but Emil is not there; Gustav’s mom starts to panic but Gustav remains
level headed; Emil sees Grundeis eating in café; Emil steals some food and Pony
Hütchen jumps on him and knocks him down; her dad runs café; Emil is
surprised that she’s a girl; Pony introduces herself; Emil tells her of
Grundeis and stolen money; she agrees to help recover money; she whistles and
runs after friends; introduces them to Emil (Kebab, Turkish break

goes into hotel and manages to get key to Grundeis’s room using a “tall tale”;
Grundeis is registered under name of “Kurzhals”; Pony returns to kids with key;
Emil takes key and goes into hotel with Pony; Grundeis goes into hotel
restaurant, stealing 2 keys from guests’ tables as he leaves; Emil goes into

Overview of the action: Emil hides in Grundeis’s room, Grundeis finds second
room key which Emil had left on sink; Grundeis throws key onto bed; Emil tries
to leave room but Grundeis has locked room door; Emil rolls under bed and
eventually gets key but paper with address from Grundeis (where Emil is to meet
to get driver’s license for dad) slips out of pocket and lands on floor; Emil
escapes from room with red brief case; kids all run back to hideout and find
jewels, traveler’s checks and Rolex watch in case but not Emil’s money; don’t
want to call police until they have driver’s license for Emil’s dad; kids are
eating in fine restaurant at table frequented by Dienstag’s parents; have been
served raw oysters and snails (escargot) and are very loud with bad manners;
they threaten and tease hostess into bringing “normal food”; Pony goes home
with Emil to find parents quarreling very loudly; Emil calls dad from phone
booth but because it’s too late at night, he just leaves message at hospital

Overview of the action: Gypsie is using pastor Hummel’s computer; accidentally
deleted her sermon for Sunday which Gustav was to have proof-read; Gypsie has
the idea to write a new sermon about justice for children; Gypsie dictates and
Gustav types; Grundeis is awakened next morning with breakfast in room; clerk
asks for autograph; speaks of “daughter”; Grundeis suddenly realizes that
something is wrong and looks for briefcase; Emil & Pony on subway; Fee
& Elfi see Grundeis leave hotel in taxi to go to meeting place; Emil &
Pony go to meeting place by lockers in subway and wait for contacts; 2 men
arrive and demand money before handing over driver’s license; Emil says he’ll
have the money in ½ hour; men threaten Emil and demand to see what’s in
briefcase; Pony opens it and both escape; chase begins; Grundeis also sees
them; eventually get away on subway; Grundeis jumps onto last car of subway; 2
men race subway in car; at stop men almost catch Emil & Pony; Pony gives
briefcase to Emil who gets back on subway; Emil watches as Grundeis kidnaps
Pony; Gypsie & Gustav are playing at home when phone rings; Gypsie gets phone
and learns of abduction and start of emergency plan; then he pretends to be
speaking with his dad; phone rings again and Gustav answers it; it is Emil’s
dad but Gypsie doesn’t want to speak to his “dad”; Gustav insists but Gypsie
pretends that he’s a friend of Emil’s and that Emil can’t come to the phone
right now.

Lektion 8 [DVD Chapters 19
(1:24:25) – 22 (1:36:30)]
Overview of the action: Gustav now realizes that Gypsie is not really Emil and
wants to know what’s going on; Gypsie brings Gustav to hideout and introduces
him as a new friend, a genius; Gustav says that they can get the money and Pony
back; meanwhile Grundeis and Pony are in a shed; Grundeis forces Pony to call
Emil; he is to bring the briefcase tomorrow at 10:00 to the giraffe enclosure
in the zoo, without the police; Gustav takes the leadership role; the kids
print hundreds of SOS fliers which they distribute to other kids everywhere in
Berlin; next morning (Sunday) pastor Hummel brings breakfast to Gypsie and
Gustav in bed and asks about her sermon; Gustav says it’s finished and his mom
doesn’t have to read through it now; Emil comes to zoo; Grundeis arrives with
Pony; Grundeis checks for jewels and exchanges briefcase for Pony; Grundeis
leaves main entrance of zoo and kids report that to others; group of kids
gather along the way behind Grundeis; pastor Hummel begins to give her sermon
(about justice for children) and realizes that it is not what she had written;
group of kids outside gets larger and larger; Grundeis feels himself trapped by
hundreds of kids; he seeks refuge in pastor Hummel’s church; “detective” kids
follow him inside and Gustav and Emil tell Frau Hummel that he’s a thief and
swindler; Hummel wants to know what’s going on; Pony says that Grundeis had
kidnapped her; Grundeis claims that the kids’ story is not so and that they are
all monsters; Emil explains about the stolen jewels and his money; Hummel asks
Grundeis to prove his innocence by opening the briefcase.

Lektion 9 [DVD Chapters 22
(1:36:31) – 24]
Overview of the action: Grundeis starts to open briefcase but then tries to
escape; kids come into the church; Hummel tells the sexton to call the police
and start the bells ringing; police come; Emil jumps on Grundeis, who is
totally surrounded by kids, and finds his money; Grundeis, Hummel and
“detectives” go to police station; officer tells kids who Grundeis really is
and that he is wanted for burglaries in 10 cities; police commissioner says how
dangerous their plan was but is full of compliments, especially for Emil; Pony
then explains that Emil is afraid of the police at home in Streiglitz because
he took a pair of used shoes from a used clothing container; commissioner says
he’ll speak with the Streiglitz police and straighten things out; he tells Emil
to buy his clothes in the future and that that won’t be a problem
because the wealthy American woman whose jewels Grundeis had stolen has given a
reward of 5,000 Marks; reporter from ZDF reports on what the kid “detectives”
have done; she interviews him surrounded by kids, cameras are present; Emils
explains that he just wanted to help his unemployed dad; then his dad surprises
him by showing up; Emil tells him what he wanted to do for his dad; dad says
that he is being hailed as a hero in Streiglitz and that rug company has given
dad new job as advisor to customers with his own office and won’t need a car;
Emils recounts what happened next as they drive home: dad got license back;
bought new car on installment plan and has been working for 3 months; aerial
shots of trip home; Emil misses all friends in Berlin, especially Pony Hütchen;
its now fall break and Emil is back at the beach on the Baltic Sea, blindfolded
and counting to 100 (as he was at the beginning of the film); he again looks
for his dad, climbs over the dunes and sees all the “detectives” on the beach;
