Steffi und Aischa sind Freundinnen. Das war nicht immer so. Anfangs hat Steffi das Mädchen aus dem Libanon gar nicht beachtet. Dabei wohnt Aischa sogar in ihrer Straße! Nur eben ganz anders: im Ausländerwohnheim. Vieles dort bleibt Stiffi fremd - manchmal streitet sie sogar richtig mit Aischa. Doch dann wird das Wohnheim überfallen. Aischa wird mit ihrer Familie zurück in den Libanon gehen, "weil hier jetzt Krieg ist", wie Aischas Vater sagt. Erst jetzt merkt Steffi, was ihr diese Freundschaft bedeutet.

Neben mir ist noch Platz, from the rich resource of Jugendliteratur that exists in the German language, is the story of a Lebanese girl, Aischa, and her German classmate, Steffi, and how they become friends. The 42 page text from dtv Junior is intended for pre-teenaged reader in Germany and works well with both American high school and college students who are intermediate learners of German. The authors Jennifer Peterson, University of Minnesota, and Gisela Hoecherl-Alden, University of Maine, include sections on teaching children's literature, pre-reading activities, how to read the text with students, many contextualized grammar exercises and cultural information, a rich selection of partner and group activities, a series of post-reading activities, and a section on cultural awareness training. The booklet is 55-pages with many pages for photocopying for classroom use.
